On Saturday, March 29th, Summit Flagging held our highly anticipated Safety Day, a routine event designed to refresh and educate our team on the importance of safety, flagging, and operational best practices. As always, the day was filled with valuable safety training, hands-on learning, and a chance for our team members to reconnect. Here’s a recap of the day’s highlights.
A Warm Start to the Day
The day began bright and early with a welcoming sign-in and a hearty breakfast. It was a great opportunity for employees—some of whom had been on seasonal layoff—to catch up with their colleagues and get ready for the day’s activities. The sense of camaraderie and enthusiasm set the tone for a productive and engaging day of flagging and safety training.
Round-Robin Training Format
The training was conducted in our signature round-robin format, where employees were divided into smaller groups of 12 or fewer. Each group rotated between stations, ensuring everyone had the opportunity to participate in each flagger training session. The stations were designed to be interactive and hands-on, allowing employees to not only observe demonstrations but also gain valuable experience under the close supervision of our expert Supervisors.
Hands-On Learning with Supervisors
At each station, our Supervisors—who are experts in their respective fields—led the flagger training sessions. They provided in-depth demonstrations on the proper use of tools and equipment, followed by hands-on practice. Employees were encouraged to actively engage with the equipment, gaining familiarity and confidence, while safety hazards specific to each station were discussed to reinforce the importance of safe practices on the job.

- Policy Changes and Safety Overview

The day kicked off with David Ream leading a session on policy changes and updates to our overall safety program. He also reviewed key aspects of PA-One Call and other important topics to ensure everyone was up-to-date on the latest regulations and safety protocols related to flagging and safety training. - Morning Huddles
Employees learned how to conduct effective morning huddles, incorporating our Stretch and Flex Program to reduce the risk of injury and promote mobility before starting the day. The session also covered essential daily paperwork and documentation requirements to ensure safety and compliance on the job, reinforcing the importance of communication in flagger training. - Daily Equipment Inspections
Proper equipment inspection is crucial to safe operations. This station taught employees how to conduct thorough daily vehicle inspections, checking fluids, lights, safety equipment, and more, ensuring every vehicle and piece of equipment was ready for the day. This session emphasized the role of routine safety checks in flagging operations. - Mobile Traffic Control Patterns
Setting up and conducting mobile traffic control patterns is an essential skill for Summit Flagging employees. In this session, participants learned how to properly set up mobile traffic control patterns to ensure safety on dynamic job sites, with a focus on hands-on flagger training and practical application of safety protocols. - Reading Pub-213
Navigating and interpreting PennDOT Publication 213 is vital for safe work zone traffic control. Employees learned how to understand and apply the guidelines in this publication to ensure proper signage, barricades, and safety measures are in place. This session underscored the importance of flagging and traffic control in maintaining a safe work environment. - Incident Reporting
In the event of an incident, it’s essential to know how to respond appropriately. This session focused on gathering the correct information, controlling the scene, and properly documenting and photographing incidents to ensure that safety measures were implemented and everything was accurately recorded. Proper incident reporting is an essential component of our overall safety training.
A Successful Wrap-Up
After an action-packed morning, the training concluded before lunch, allowing employees to reflect on the valuable lessons learned throughout the day. The hands-on training, combined with expert guidance from our Supervisors, left everyone feeling more confident and knowledgeable about flagging and safety protocols.
